Environmental studies

The control of environmental aspects is a key element for any company, not only to respect and protect the environment, but also to improve economical and technical competitiveness.

In this field, we provide the following services:

Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA)

Integrated Environmental Authorization (IEA), IPPC directive

Management and control of greenhouse gas emissions, Directive 2003/87/EC

Environmental studies for other authorizations

Use of environmental forecasting models

Environmental aspects management

Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA):

  • Evironmental Impact Studies (EIS) for new plants and facilities or for modifications to existing plants, in order to complete the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) according to national and regional norms.
  • Environmental Impact Studies at international level, aimed at obtaining funds from the IFC (International Finance Corporation – World Bank Group).
  • Verification of the requirements needed to start an EIA and support during the EIA procedures (Preliminary Environmental Studies, assistance during Public Authorities verifications and for the drafting of technical documents, support in promotional activities and public presentations of the project, etc.).

...

Integrated Environmental Authorization (IEA), IPPC directive:

Preparation of all required documents for the Integrated Environmental Authorization (IEA), in accordance to national and regional norms. Analysis of the BATs (Best Available Techniques), based on the relative reference documents (European BReFs or Italian guidelines). Preparation of the Monitoring and Control Plan.

  • Support during the implementation of EIA requirements (deriving, for example, from EIA environmental norms – atmospheric emissions, water drainage, waste production, etc. – or from the Monitoring and Control Plan).

  • Support during public authority verifications on authorization procedures, modifications and any other requirement of the Authorities.

  •  Environmental studies for other authorizations, environmental forecasting models, communication of environmental issues, management of various environmental aspects.

...

Management and control of greenhouse gas emissions, Directive 2003/87/EC

  • Support to obtain the Authorization and to implement subsequent modifications according to law provisions: identification and collection of necessary information, module drafting, contacts with authorities in charge and drafting of any additional technical document.

  • Design of the monitoring plan, according to the European Directive 2003/87/EC: analysis of current greenhouse gas emissions and relative historical data, identification of major and minor sources, identification of best applicable approaches, drafting of monitoring plan in accordance to ministerial provisions.

  • Assessment of the risk of errors in the annual declaration about greenhouse gas emissions, in accordance to Decision 2007/589/CE par.10: development of a quantitative method to assess the risk of errors which may cause the rejection of the annual declaration and drafting of a report about methods and results.

  • Audits: execution of internal audits aimed at verifying the correct use of the monitoring plan and support to the company during the official verifier audits.

...

Environmental studies for other authorizations

  • Authorization for renewable energy power plants

  • Authorization for waste management plants

  • Authorization for atmospheric emissions

  • Authorization for water drainage

  • Authorization for greenhouse gas emissions as required by law

  • Support during pubblic verifications

  • Impact assessment studies about vegetation, animals, ecosystems and incidence assessment

...

Use of environmental forecasting models

  • Effects of emissions on soil: models for the study of effects on soil, with the simulation of atmospheric spreading and movement of chemical and physical pollutants, coming both from specific industrial sources and from atmospheric movement (including studies on atmospheric spreading of odorous substances); use of recommended forecasting models, both Gaussian models (AERMOD/ISC3 Pro) and puff models (Calmet – Calpuff), which are taken as reference by major control agencies (U.S. EPA, ISPRA, MATTM, etc.).

  • Noise impact: studies on noise propagation for the assessment of environmental noise impact as required by law, with control of mitigation measures efficiency; use of recommended forecasting models such as RAYNOISE (LMS Int.) and SoundPLAN (SoundPLAN Int. LLC), which allow to assess the propagation of noise produced by one or more sources in a closed and/or open space; noise measurements for the assessment of environmental noise impact or for the assessment of occupational risk according to law requirements.

  • Dispersion of emissions in surface waters: forecasting models for the assessment of chemical and physical pollutant dispersion in surface waters; use of forecasting models such as CORMIX for the analysis of sewage diffusion in various kind of waters (rivers, lakes, seas, etc.), recommended by US EPA to assess the impact of industrial sewage, and GNOME (NOAA, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) for the prediction of possible routes and trajectories that a supernatant fluid might follow over a certain time in a marine environment.

  • Dispersion of emissions on soil, subsoil and groundwater: HSSM model (U.S. EPA) for the simulation of hydrocarbon spills in the subsoil, lens formation in the capillary fringe, solution of soluble components and their transportation in the water (the use of this model is also recommended by Public Authorities to assess environmental risks after major accidents); MO-DFLOW model to simulate the dynamics of groundwater and pollutant particles in groundwater after a polluting event; Rome 2.1 and Giuditta 3.2 models, based on ASTM standards, for the development of risk analysis and the identification of reclamation targets in polluted areas.

  • Visual impact: photographic reconstruction and photorealistic 3D rendering, aimed at showing the project in the designated location in order to prepare an environmental impact assessment or landscape study.

  • Rapid Environmental and Health Risk Assessment (REHRA): application of the REHRA model, elaborated by ICARO in collaboration with the Italian Ministry of Environment and with several professionals at international level, to rapidly evaluate environment and health risks linked to specific industrial sources, based on GIS software.

Environmental aspects management

  • Monitoring and control plans as established by the Integrated Environmental Authorization, and with respect to greenhouse gas emissions (European Directive 2003/87/EC), in accordance to national guidelines about the content of the Monitoring and Control Plan.

  • Requirements linked to waste management and control according to law provisions: consulting about norms and techniques related to the waste management system and to possible sanctions of any subject involved in the process.

  • Data management, summaries and reports of environmental monitoring and investigations: collection and management of details about environmental monitoring.
